Artist Spotlight: Suprise Khoza
We chat to South African Artist Suprise Khoza about the role of Artists in highlighting issues, and what his message is to the women of South Africa.
How did you come to be an Artist?
The love of art started when I was in standard 3. I discovered that I was an artist when doing some school art projects because my work was always on top of the class and my marks were always very high. During that time I was inspired by the work of Walt Disney and drew cartoons.
Your Art often highlights current issues - do you believe Art can help create change? What is the role of the Artist in today’s world?
Yes I believe artists play an important role in terms of healing, repairing, recovering, rebuilding, renovating, reimagining, reuniting and reshaping the culture of a society. Artists should be seen as equalizers, indicators, and the thinking agents of a society. The art that they produce should be seen as the universal language of realism and truth. Therefore, art serves as a marker of cultural achievement.
This women’s month, what would your message be to the women of South Africa?
Don’t get stuck in an abusive relationship, free yourself before is too late. Your life is a precious gift from God, respect it. Abuse is a Mental Disease and I want every woman to protect herself. #SAVEYOURSELF.
